Sterling Davis is a Hawaii based freelancer originally from Columbus, Ohio. In his short time in Hawaii he has quickly established himself as a frequent substitute musician with the Royal Hawaii Band. He earned a BM in Music Education and a minor in Jazz Studies from Stephen F.Austin State University (SFASU) in Nacogdoches, TX where he studied with trombone soloist Dr.Debra Scott. Sterling graduated from the Manhattan School of Music where he studied with Colin Williams of the New York Philharmonic. In New York, Sterling still works as a freelancer playing in  local opera companies, musicals, chamber music series, radio programs, museums, and pop-up orchestras.  He is also a founding member of the Oculus Brass Quintet based in New York City. 

 

Before college, Sterling served four years in the United States Marine Corps Field Bands with the Parris Island Marine Band. During his time there, he served as the bass trombonist in the ceremonial and concert bands. He also played 2nd trombone in the Parris Island Jazz Band, and was the front man of the Dirty Boots Brass Band.

 

Sterling's professional associations include Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), International Trombone Association (ITA), and Beta Gamma Omega fine arts fraternity.
