Dr. Andrew Friedrichs
Trombone

Trombonist Andrew Friedrichs is a consummate musician whose expertise and lexicon span all modes of musical expression. Adept in the classical, jazz and contemporary mediums, Andrew possesses a unique capacity to express himself as a trombonist, composer, conductor, arranger and producer.

 

An accomplished trombonist, Andrew has won several concerto competitions, including a school-wide competition at University of Miami’s Frost School of Music where he was featured performing Paul Creston’s “Fantasy for Trombone” with the Frost Symphony Orchestra. He has also seen success in the world of orchestral and military band auditions, having been named the winner of trombone auditions for the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” and for the U. S. Air Force “Heritage Band of America.” A YoungArts Award Winner, he was nominated for Presidential Scholar in the Arts.

 

As a member of the Florida Grand Opera, the Palm Beach Symphony and the Henry Mancini Institute Ensemble, Andrew has had the privilege of performing alongside such musical greats as Michael Feinstein, “Take 6,” James Newtown Howard, Terrence Blanchard, Ben Folds, and Arturo Sandoval, among others. He has also performed with New World Symphony, Palm Beach Opera, Southwest Florida Symphony, Boca Raton Symphonia, Symphoria and NuDeco.

 

A rising composer, he has written pieces for wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, and film as well as for chamber ensemble and solo works. His compositional style is a colorful blend of various elements from the classical, jazz and contemporary idioms. His compositions have been recorded by the Frost Wind Ensemble and the Frost Concert Jazz Band and have been performed by the Frost Trombone Choir as well as chamber ensembles from the University of Miami and the Eastman School of Music.

 

As an educator, he has given masterclasses and workshops for high school and collegiate trombonists, low brass students and band students on various topics. He has served as a quartet coach for the Eastman Summer Trombone Workshop and has taught Aural Skills at the University of Miami Frost School of Music.

Andrew studied trombone at the Eastman School of Music under Mark Kellogg and at the Frost School of Music under Timothy Conner. He completed his DMA at the Frost School of Music and his thesis was entitled “Suggestions for Incorporating Entrepreneurship Education in the Classical Brass Performance Studio.” His other teachers include William Harris and John Marcellus for trombone as well as Charles Mason and Gary Lindsay for composition and arranging.
